Willem Ravelli, who debuted in 1917 as opera
singer (Nazarener in Salomé), mainly became known as oratorio
singer. He appeared more than 400 times in the part of Christ
in the St Matthew Passion. Hermann Schey worked
since 1922 in Berlin as concert and oratorio singer. He was particularly
admired for his Bach interpretations. Concert tours brought him
great success in the European music centres. In 1929 he sang
in Amsterdam with the Concertgebouw Orchestra under
Willem Mengelberg the Kindertotenlieder by Gustav Mahler,
and so left a lasting impression that he returned since then
annually to Holland. Johan Lammen started his
singers-career as concert- and oratorio-singer, a.o. in the St
Matthew Passion. On December the 1th, 1933 he performed with
the company Opera Studio (of the Nederlandse Operastichting),
in the Amsterdamse Stadsschouwburg the role of Achilles
in Gulio Cesare by G.F.Händel, this performance became the
beginning of his opera-career.
Arnold van Mill studied at the academies of
Rotterdam and The Hague and continued his song-study with Mrs.
Zegers the Beyl. He became the first line "house bass"
for London/Decca records in the 1950s. He wielded a virile basso
cantata that displayed ample bite for Wagner, while being supple
enough to make him a creditable singer of Mozart bass roles such
as Osmin and Sarastro. Harry van der Kamp, born
in 1947 first studied law and psychology in Amsterdam before
starting vocal studies with Max van Egmond and later with Herman
Woltman, Alfred Deller and Pierre Bernac. Today, Harry van der
Kamp is internationally known as one of the most important bass
singers in the solo and ensemble repertoire of the 14th - 18th
centuries. He appeared in many operas of the baroque period (by
Peri, Agazzari, Monteverdi, Cavalli, Cesti, Purcell, Meder, Rameau,
and Händel) and in several operas of later date. Robert
Holl appears as soloist with the major orchestras, and
has worked with many outstanding conductors, including Claudio
Abbado, Carlo Maria Giulini, Bernard Haitink, Nikolaus Harnoncourt,
Wolfgang Sawallisch, Sir Neville Marriner, and Riccardo Chailly,
among others. As a frequent guest artist at music festivals,
Holl has appeared at the Vienna Festival, Mozart Woche Salzburg,
Salzburg Festspiele, Berliner Festwochen, Flanders Festival,
Prague Spring, Schubertiade Hohenems, and Settimane
