Henk Smit was a concert-, oratorio- and opera singer. He started as a real bass in roles as Zaccharia and Méphistophélès and just later on he changed to dramatic bass-baritone roles. Numerous appearances in a big varied repertory from Bach via Wagner to the modern composers. He performed at the "Holland Festival" and at the premieres of Winter Cruise (1979, Henkemans) and Esmée (1995, Loevendie) . He also gave numerous performances in Europe as well in the United States.

Henk Smit - 73 meanwhile - is still active as singer. Next March 31th he appears in the Amsterdam RAI Theater in Verdi's Nabucco in the role of the Jewish high priest Zaccharia. The title role of Nabucco is alternately performed by the baritones Ernst Daniël Smid and Henk Poort, Abigaille by the American soprano Janice Dixon. The whole under direction of conductor Jan Stulen and stage direction of Cox Habbema.
