Hello,

German singer Ella Blame has a vocal range of 4 octaves minus 1 note, i.e., from A (baritone) to g3 (coloratura soprano). Maybe, you would like to listen to Ella Blame's song "Last View" on http://www.ella-blame.com/english/download.htm. However, this song doesn't show her entire range.

Kind regards,

Dieter Hirschmann

Great page Joop........

I am a great fan of Cristina Deutekom and have been trying for many years to get the double CD (issued on Phillips) of her singing Bellini, Donizetti and Rossini arias but to no success.Yet again in this wide world of ours we have a very under-recorded soprano.Where is her studio recordings of the operas of Bellini Donizetti and Rossini etc, no-where. I fear the companies in those days just relied on Joan Sutherland and Caballe and back catalogue recordings of Maria Callas. Such a shame. I was also impressed with all of the other singers you have on your site, so many from the Netherlands, so many again under-recorded, but thanks to your site they are at least kept alive for others to view and future generations appreciate that the world once had such lovely voices. Many thanks and best wishes to you...

Nick King

Thanks Nick,

I agree, some vocalist worthwhile to record are hardly find in record shops. Only some minor labels releases live performances, so let us count our blessings. I know there must be a cd of here with Bellini, Donizetti and Rossini arias, but I have never seen it. Again thanks and,

best regards,

30-11-2002,

Hi, I think you're website is very interesting, I've been in love with opera for a long time since I used to see my mom performing (she was a soprano dramatic coloratura but doesn't perform anymore) and I find very interesting that Cristina Deutekom has perform F7 (or F4 as you called it...I guess you are counting C4 as starting point), it's usually very unlikely that a singer could sing higher than C7, and only very few piccolo coloraturas can sing higher than that... But that limit has been crossed by singers that even though the posses classical training, they sing pop or soul... Like Minnie Riperton (have you heard about her) in one of her songs, I think is "Adventures in paradise" she sings the D above C7. Also Rachelle Ferrell...a jazz singer...she sings E7 in her song "It only took a minute" and holds the note for 20 seconds. But the highest note...I think is by Mariah Carey...in the live performance of "Emotions" live at the VMA'S 91, the shit G7! and in a remix of her song "Anytime you need a friend" she sings the same note and then goes to A7 (that's what some people say, I haven't measured it by myself)...and her lowest note was B-b2 in a live performance of "Make it happen"...that's virtually 5 octaves.
I personally have classical training and I'm an inspiring pop vocalist...I've developed a range of over 4 octaves (5 if you consider whistle register part of the range).

Well...I just wanted congratulate you for your website and send you my comments and just a proof of what I say about Mariah's note and my own range :) (just recorded yesterday, not very well but shows some high notes).

King of the Night

Hi 'King',

Thanks for your reaction. On my old piano the 'central c' is as far as I know a c1. This is the first c left from a1 (440hz), see the graphic. Your notation is unknown to me, but my musical training is more as 25 year ago and was limited to about one year piano lessons. Your notations of g4 and a4 (or g7 and a7) by Mariah Carey as you call it are unbelievable, I can't check it but believe you on your words. But I'm more impressed by the 20 seconds e4 (e7) of Rachelle Ferrell. On the other hand, the classical vocalist in which I'm more interested, they sing without use of a microphone and can fill a whole theatre with their voice! :-)

best regards,
Joop Lindeijer

Joop,
If that is permissible to refer to you. Thank you for the information contained. I have a request if possible. I have been trying to locate an old friend, and I use the word "old" advisedly, Maria Van Dongen. I have not been able to return to Europe for many years and lost contact, Do you happen to know how to reach her or where she may be appearing- Austria, Switzerland, Italia or anywhere.
I do appreciate your assistance in this effort.
Respectfully,
Ronald M. Chase, M.D. (USA)
Meanwhile I received the address of Maria van Dongen. Joop Lindeijer.

In your research have you ever come across the name Cornelie Meysenheym? She was born in Djakarta in the 1840s of a Dutch father, French mother, sang in Europe, later moved to US and taught at the Met, died in early 1920s. I'd appreciate any info you could provide.

Thanks, Scott Schubel

Dear J.M. Lindeijer,

I was admiring your extraordinary website, particularly for its overview of Eduard van Beinum. I'm
in search of a complete discography of the pianist Cor de Groot, and was hoping perhaps you could
assist me in this regard.

I believe I have all his Philips Dutch Masters issues ('Emperor', Chopin 4 Ballades, Liszt Concerti),
though I've read references to a Rachmaninov recital which includes the First Sonata, but all my
inquiries - for instance with Kuijper - have been unsuccessful in determining whether these
performances really exist on CD. I keep hoping for a reissue of his complete Beethoven Concerti
cycle with Otterloo, but alas, I seem to be waiting in vain.

Any help regarding a discography would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks and best wishes for your continuing success.

Dear Mr. Joe More,

I believe I can help you. There exists a foundation 'Cor de Groot-stichting'. I phoned them this morning and received their e-mail address.

Success with your collection and let me know if everything is all right.

hi. I'm intrigued by the assertion that Cristina Deutekom has a range of more than four octaves. Since the highest recorded notes are by a French soprano of the early 20th century who could hit a top B in alt, for Cristina to have a four octave range she would have to equal that and descend to B at the very bottom of the tenor range.

Sorry Joop - I don't believe it!

John Davison

Dear John,

I wrote Cristina a letter, including your poetic message and received the following - unfortunately - short answer:

Geachte Heer Lindeijer!
Cristina Deutekom

*) f4, at stage J.L.

In short, Cristina wrotes, she could sing - at stage ! - from low A (Un Ballo/ Amelia) to F4 ('Queen of the Night' and 'Schauspieldirektor'/ Frau Silberklang ) The conclusion must be: more as 4 octaves!
But octaves isn't the most important thing of the quality of a voice. On this moment I'm writing a few pages for my site about Kathleen Ferrier. She only possessed in the beginning a reach of 2 octaves. Later her voice developed and could she reach a-2. But what a beautiful voice she had. One of my favourites.

best regards, Joop

11-02-2003,
note: Cristina must be mistaken, she never sang higher as f3. J.L.

Thank you very much!!!

I have many LPs and CDs of her, but I am looking around for a long time to get them all. (Espacially the Mozart Album I would like to have on CD. There is a 3CD box available by the brabant dagblatt but there ist no posibillity for me to buy it....). Maybe you have some information where I can find rare recordings of C. Deutekom?

Thank you very much again.

Dear Mr Lindeijer,

With great interest I've read about my greataunt Maartje Offers on your Dutch Divas site. In due time I'll send you the titbits of additional information I have. But I will start now with this photo which I have on line. It's quite big I'm afraid and I don't know how to minimize it. I do hope you can handle it.

Keep up the good work in the meantime!
