First of all I'd like to apologize for my VERY BAD english, secondly I would love to thank you for the great work you've been doing, I find your website is full of very interesting information on octaves and voice ranges. I'm from Italy and I've seen another italian guy named Dario Marchiori, posting a feedback on your website. Since you seem a professionist i would LOVE to know which notes our "beloved" Giuni Russo (passed away in september aged 53) is actually hitting. Thereby I enclose two small clips from her songs "L'addio" (The Farewell) and "La zingara" (Gypsy Lady) the latter one sang live in a church. Hoping you'll find the time to answer me and provide me with any information you can. I wish you best seasonal greetings.

Alex

Dear Alex,

With your English is nothing wrong, we understand each other and that's sufficient for me. I listened to the samples and about La zingara, she sang there a beautiful and strong a3-flat. The other song is more difficult to say something that makes sense. Those short staccato notes are for me to difficult to determine. But about La zingara I'm sure.

Great Website! Regarding Callas's 'f ' in alt, you cite the Bell song...another example is in the Rossini variations from Armida "D'Amore al dolce impero (27 XII, 1954, San Remo) - A little more
sustained and therefore perhaps a bit clearer, although the recording quality is lacking. Great stuff on Deutekom...she is one of my early favorites, and I've always found it difficult to locate anything
other than Zauberflote and Attila; your blurb on her with all the info will be a big help! Thanks,
Dustin

Dustin,

thanks for the compliments, nice to hear that you enjoyed it.

Dear Sir:
I find your site fascinating, and wonder if it would be possible to obtain any knowledge about one Maria van Dongen? An acquaintance of mine said he met, and knew her well forty some years ago, while she was performing with the Zurich State Opera? I would like to surprise him with one of her recordings, and perhaps an address where he may be able to be in touch with her once again?
Any help you may be able to give will be most graciously accepted, and appreciated.
If you do manage to find something, and I do understand how many other request you must have, but perhaps if you do have an itsy bitsy second, it would not inconvenience you to e-mail any information back to this address?
Cordially,
Jacqui Hoffman

Dear Mrs Hoffman,

This is accidental, just a few days ago I wrote an article - in Dutch - on my site about Maria van Dongen, meanwhile also translated in English. I even added a soundsample. So you can make your friend happy. He can hear her again. But there is more.
This evening I phoned with Maria van Dongen and it was okay to her that I gave you her address:

Mrs M. van Dongen

Dear Mr Lindeijer

I was surfing the net looking for pieces of information about singers who can produce high notes and found, during this search, your site (which I am pretty much enjoying).
I am no professional nor singer, just a mere music lover, my understanding of notes is fairly low especially when using an "a,b,c, ..." scale (I am used, perhaps because I am Italian, to "do, re mi ..a.s.o).
However I am most curious about particular voices, and remember seen on TV, while in Australia, a male singer producing a note beyond the piano range and demonstrating, live on stage, his 6 octaves+ voice range. I am quite sure that he appears in the Guinness Book of Records, but
honestly I can't remember his name and believe he's not even a singer. However I wrote you because I am interested in finding out how high 2 of my favourite Italian singers can go: Antonella Ruggiero (Matia Bazar), and Giuni Russo (who has sadly just passed away).
IN a few of their performances (Matia Bazar: "il tempo del sole" and "C'e' tutto un mondo intorno" and Giuni Russo: "Un'estate al mare" and "L'addio") they have been able to reach quite high notes.
I have 3 of those 4 songs on mp3, and I am currently looking for the 4th one, so if needed I can forward them to you (e-mail permitting), any additional comments will be also most appreciated.
I know your site is about Dutch singers and it's not my mean to interfere with it or disturb anyhow, I will be awaiting for your answer.

With kind regards,
Marchiori Dario

Dear Mr. Dario,

I know do, re, mi, etc. I learned it probably at school - years ago -, so I believe it's not restricted to Italy but international! Concerning the two singers you mentioned, I don't know them, but that says
nothing about their qualities. Thanks for your offer to send me the mp3's, but for the site it's only for interest if they are higher then the magnificent notes - d2 - of Nicolai Gedda. I'm waiting for a 'good'
recording of a singer with higher notes in full voice, not falset/ headvoice. If you think that the samples you have are those f's, then I'm very much interested.
By the way ... the Italian language, is for my ears the most beautiful language of the world.

best regards,
Joop Lindeijer

Dear Mr. Lindeijer,

I'm a Danish music student, who absolutely adore Cristina Deutekom. Would you happen to know of an adress where I could write her?

Sincerely,
Maria Lakomska

Dear Mrs. Lakomska,

I will send a copy of your e-mail to Cristina Deutekom. She will be pleased by your adoration.

best regards,
Joop Lindeijer

Dear Mr. Lindeijer,

Thank you so much, that is most kind of you!
I heard Deutekom's voice the first time when I was 14 - I had bought a box of Mozart cd's and she was singing the Queen of the night - I was absolutely thrilled. So shortly after I bought her complete recording of "Diew
Zauberflöte" and I am now the happy owner of several of her recordings, which I cherish very much - her style is so personal and her voice is like no other soprano I hav heard!

Sincerely,
(Miss) Maria Lakomska

Dear Mr Lindeijer,
I'm french so please excuse my english.
your biography about Cristina Deutekom is well done and truly interesting.
Concerning your "high C" section, I would like to make some observations. Some composers wrote, as Mozart, a g3 : Gretry, Massenet (Esclarmonde), and recently Petitgirard for "John Merrick the story of Elephant man" (the recording is avalaible in France). I believe Charles Chaynes for his "Poèmes de Sapho" and the stratospheric voice of Mady Mesplé wrote a g3sharp (this recording is breathtaking as the voice of Mady is always extremely high).
Mado Robin, another amazing french coloratura could sung up to d4 (once in a live concert in Vichy) and her c4 is well known. You can hear it in a new cd and it's strong and powerful.
I have rare recordings of coloraturas soprano who could reach a3 or b3 : Mina Foley, Susanna Foster; Ellen Beach Yaw a3flat : Elisabeth Vidal, Ruth Welting, Mady Mesplé, Beverly Hoch, Bogna Sokorska, Miliza Korjus, Natalie Dessay and g3 : Luciana Serra, Edita Gruberova, the wonderful Kathryn Grayson, Edda Moser etc...
I have also recordings of pop-divas who could reach g3 and even higher notes : Maureen McGovern, Cleo Laine and Minnie Ripperton (up to c4 I guess in the song "adventures in paradise"). I don't like the high notes of Mariah Carey which seem artificials and really weaks.
Regarding the male voice, do you know the sopranist Cristof Christopellis who could sang up to e3 ? I like the high F of Pavarotti in the recording of I Puritani. I heard Juan Diego Florez 2 weeks ago during a concert in Paris. His High register is wonderful.
I 'm looking for recordings of Maria Remola, a cuban coloratura soprano, do you know her ?
Best regards

Olivier Ojzerowicz

Dear Mr.Ojzerowicz

Thanks for your detailed e-mail. But did you noticed that Mado Robin in the fragment on my site sings a b3! And that's higher than Mady Desplé's stratospheric g3 sharp.
The pop artist I don't follow. As somebody wrote me a time ago, it's a mess there. And I agree your opininion about Mariah Carey. I don't like her voice and what she sings. It's just for the record that I placed her.
About male voices, a singer wrote me ... " When I have been training for a year, I will send you a copy of my High G and A and then you can give me an opinion". So let's waite.

By the way ... your English looks very good to me.

best rgards,
Joop Lindeijer

Joop,

My wife, Alexandra is from Holland and is a singer. A while ago her father gave her a CD by Aafje Heynis. Shortly afterwards, Alexandra's father died and my wife sung 'Ave Maria' at her dad's wedding. My wife would very much like to write a letter to Aafje, as she has been a real influence. Is it possible to forward her address so that she can write to her?

All the best,
Mike Charalambous

Hello Mike,

Dear Joop,

We have just received the Joseph Schmidt CD in the mail today. Thank you so much! You have made my Mother very happy and I appreciate it. She cried when I played it for her. She used to listen to him on the radio with her Father when she was growing up in Melbourne and she said she never thought she would find that song again. He was her favourite tenor.

Once again, many thanks for your kindness,

Julie

Hello.
I'd like to know the region code and NTSC or PAL of the DVD "To the Heart of Art Song with Elly Ameling in Masterclass".
I live in Japan and Japanese DVD player is region code 2 and NTSC.

Hello Mr. Tsutomo Tanaka,

I looked for you, the DVD is PAL and region free. However, my ordinary DVD player, a Panasonic plays PAL as well as NTSC! I presume most players can handle both types.

I wonder if any bass has managed the low B flat in Mahler's 8th symphony, would anyone here provide us a version as a reference?
or how can we be convinced that there is such a note in this work?
looking forward to your answer, thank you!

I will place your reaction to the 'reaction page'. Perhaps there comes an answer/reaction to your question.

Hello from the States,

My name is Corry Bell. My mom's name (maiden) is Cornelia Brouwenstijn, niece to Gre Brouwenstijn. We were wondering if Tante Gre's album, "Gre Brouwenstijn Zingt Beethoven (Fidelio), Verdi en Puccini" (EMI) is available on CD. It was published in 1971 as her farewell compilation.

If you have any information, we would really appreciate it!
Thank you,
Corry Bell

Hello Corry,

I believe the cd-set (EMI 7243 5 65823 2 3) is still available, but has nothing to do with her farewell. The recordings are from 1966. Philips also re-released a record as a farewell tribute, recordings with the Wiener Symphoniker (not Philharmoniker!) under Rudolf Moralt. Also older recordings.
Her 1971 live recordings are a Fidelio (Febr.1971) with Anton de Ridder and her final concerto on Juni 25th under Haitink. She sang seven aria's: Wagner, Mascagni, Verdi, Puccini and Giordano.

best regards,

Hi, I love the sight, and as I am a massive fan of Mariah Carey, I am so glad that she is receiving the recognition she deserved. But the reason I wanted to leave a message is that you recognise that the 19th centurt singer Rubini hit a High F in his head voice. I am also a male singer, the reason this intrigued me is that you find this amazing which I'm sure it is, but I regularly hit a High G, a note above this, and at my best have even managed a High A (!) and I have only recently began singing lessons (obviously I possessed this ability before hand). I was just wondering if this really is a unique talent? Thanks and well done again with the excellent work on your site
A. Early

Hello Gabriel,

A high F by a tenor on stage, without microphone and with a volume that even the audience at the chairs at the back in the theatre could here them is unique. As example the B of Mado Robin, that's unique. I received samples of singers with their high notes, but no one could convince me. So your high G , even high A, I have my doubts.

best regards,
Joop Lindeijer

Hello,

First of all congratulations on your wonderfull site, it's really great and interesting. I learned a lot about low and high notes, and also about german singers. I your section of high C' you don't mention the famous spanish tenor Alfredo Kraus, who could perfectly sing high c and above, at his 70 years.

I have a song where you can listen to this, if you are interested I could send it to you.

Thanks for your compliments and kind offer. But I know Alfredo Kraus and have several recordings of him. By the way: not German singers but Dutch singers!

Dear Joop Lindeijer,

I have heard CÉCILE VAN DE SANT last week in Göttingen during RINALDO at the Göttinger Händel Festspiele and would like to ask her to be the Medea in our Teseo-production. Please could you bring me in contact with her or her agency?

Thank you and best wishes

Dear Dörte Reisener,

I was also very enthusiastic about Cécile van de Sant's voice the first time I heard here. I will send this e-mail also to her.

We did a search on Maartje Offers (my grand mothers aunt) and found you site. My dad was very touched as he could still recall he voice very well, and she sounded the same as her sister who was very close to my father.

Thanks

Rick de Boer
Perth Western Australia

Dear Rick,

Glad to hear that my site and especially the pages about Maartje Offers enjoyed your dad! Maartje Offers is one of my favorites and surely one of the greatest Dutch contraltos of the past. I'm still working to promote her and other Dutch singers and the coming month I will introduce, in cooperation with a German record company, 10 cd's. Concerning my part on no profit base. Among them one of Maartje Offers. Several of the 78 RPM records have never released on cd before.

Dear Mr Lindeijer
Love your site, very interesting reading and excellent photos. Do you have an address (e-mail or otherwise) for Aafje Heynis? I would like to let her know what pleasure her recordings (of which I think I have most) have given over the last half century. She was a jewel of singer.
thanks Peter Nauta

Dear Mr Nauta,

Thanks for the compliments. I agree in your opinion about Aafje Heynis, she is one of my favorites. Pity she was such a modest person, she was really of outstanding class and deserved more international acknowledgement.

Her address: ....

Have you any information on the Dutch soprano, Gerda Pons, who sang pre- and post- World War 2?

Thank you.

Stephanie Hayman

Dear Stephanie,

There exists very little information about her. The last I read about here was a performance of Rigoletto on March 31th 1946. She sang Gilda. And that is the last sign of live of her so far. I can write a small page about her on my site. I often get reactions of family afterwards.
But what is the reason for your special interest in Gerda Pons?

best regards,
Joop Lindeijer

22-01-2004
Dear Mr. Lindeijer,

thank you for all the information, especially for the audio-files. Unfortunately Cristina Deutekom is lost in oktaves. Maybe she reaches the A 110 Hz in rehearsal, for voice-training.
So do I (As (half a note below the A 110 Hz) to g´´´ (6 notes higher then a´´880 Hz), for training. On stage for me it is f to b´´).
But no conducter would have aloud her, to do this in the role of Amelia. The lowest note in Amelia is a 220 Hz, which is very low for a soprano on stage. Even the lowest opera-role for women (Gäa in R.Strauß: Daphne, which is a dramatic alto role) goes just down to d (below the 220 Hz a).

Yours sincecerely
Claudia Gorzalka

Dear Mrs. Gorzalka,

Thanks for your reaction and explanation. I already had my doubts, and I agree completely with your remark: "But no conductor would have aloud her, to do this in the role of Amelia."
So 4 octaves as reach for Christina, yes, but as you stated not on stage during an opera performance. So I will make a few changes to the page.

best regards,
Joop Lindeijer

7-01-2004
Dear Joop.

Greetings from Sweden.
My name is Oscar and I have with great interest read your article about singers with extraordinary ranges, heights and depths.
I would however like to add a few notes on the tenor text. There are several high d's written in operas. A few examples: "Le postillon de Lonjumeau" is one of them, "Zelmira" by Rossini (and a few others), "Il Pirata" and "I Puritani" by Bellini is some others. AND, in "I Puritani"
Bellini actually did WRITE the infamous high f especially for the tenor you have mentioned in your text, Giovanni Batista Rubini.

The world record for a tenor is held by tenor Stefan Zucker who sang a high a! in a performance of "I Capuleti e I Montecchi" by Bellini. (Although I have read that he uses the same "head voice technique" as the above mentioned Rubini. AND I have actually heard him sing and it isn't pretty. He
actually sounds like something out a cartoon.)

I myself have recordings of two singers making a high f in full voice:
William Matteuzzi: In live performances of "I Puritani" by Bellini and "L'italiana in Algeri" as well as "La scala di seta" by Rossini.
Gregory Kunde: In a live performance of "Bianca e Fernando" by Bellini. If you'd like, I could send you the songs by e-mail. Tell me how you'd like them.

I guess we shouldn't mention pop singers in this case (it's a jungle out there), although it's simply fantastic to hear Mariah Carey produce the incredibly high notes on your site.

Thanks for for your time and an interesting site. (I have actually bought recordings of Erna Sack and Mado Robin thanks to you!)

Best regards,
Oscar

Dear Oscar,

Thanks for your compliments. Without any doubt, the page highC is the most visited page on my site, and with the most reactions. Some of them very interesting and very detailed.
I'm very interested in the arias by the the two tenors you mention. I will put a sample of them on the page and of course this will led to more reactions. A high f in full voice, it sounds unbelievable.
Of Mariah Carey I have got more samples, but the number of reactions - pro and contra - were so great, that I limited the part of her on my site.
She was for instance placed in the Guinness Book of Records, but afterwards, removed again. As you stated, it's a jungle there. If you will send me the arias as mp3 or mp3pro, this would be fine. But
any other format I also can handle.

best regards from Holland,
Joop
