Joy Mac-Arden - real name Jo Ijzerman - was born in Haarlem and wanted to become a teacher in the beginning. Pauline de Haan-Manifarges had mainly give her lessons and she also has followed lessons with Hey (the husband of Birgit Engell) and Tamanti. Her debut she made in Kopenhagen and afterwards she build a career with appearances in Paris, Biarritz and Monte Carlo. After her marriage she lived in Paris and obtained great regards with people as Gabriel Pierné and Maurice Ravel of whom she performed compositions. In the Netherlands she appeared in the main role of the opera 'Beatrys' (1927) of Willem Landré.
